I just heard on the news this morning that your cable box is one of the biggest energy hogs in your whole house. Some utilize the same wattage as a washing machine... and are rarely turned off. So while you're slumbering away at night - or just too dang busy to watch all of your favorite shows - your energy bill keeps ticking up. And I assure you, living in the dessert, like I do - I'd much rather use those dollars to keep my house at a manageable temperature for the summer. Can I get an amen, from my fellow desert dwellers, please? Not only that, cable service is pretty pricy. Want some money saving tips from yours truly? Keep reading! t
When I moved to Phoenix a couple of years ago, I made the bold move of not getting cable installed. I figured, I was in a new place and I should be out meeting new people, running exploring and/or adventuring, not getting caught up with the Kardashians. Most days, I don't miss it at all. On the recommendation of a friend, I got a handy hi-def antenna (like this one) so I could have basic channels that fills almost all of my television entertainment needs. I mean, if you've got a Friday night date with Lester Holt on Dateline, that's pretty much all you need, right? Wrong. I don't have ESPN!! Because I do love me some college football. Fortunately, my team (The University of Michigan) has been pretty lackluster in the past couple of years, so it hasn't been completely heartbreaking. But, things are changing this year... in a big way and I want to be a part of it - but the thought of shelling out a bunch of money for a whole lot of channels just so I can get ESPN seems ridiculous.
Enter SlingTV! My good friend, Lindsay introduced me to what may be my new favorite thing. SlingTV is a live TV subscription - much like Netflix, where you can stream older episodes of shows BUT you can also watch shows in real time. Shows on say... ESPN and HGTV. For a cool $20 per month, you can get 19 channels (ESPN, ESPN2, AMC, TNT, TBS, CNN, A&E, Lifetime, History, Food Network, HGTV, Travel Channel, Cartoon Network/Adult Swim, Disney Channel, ABC Family, IFC, H2, El Rey Network, Maker, Galavision)
Pretty sweet, right? All you need is a Roku, Xbox One or an Amazon Fire TV Stick to stream. You can also stream through most of your mobile devices.
So there you have it - Michigan Football & Coach Harbough's debut can all be viewed from the comfort of my living room. Until then, I'll just be watching a whole lot of HGTV!
